Strings made from sheep gut have been mentioned in the history of stringed instruments since the earliest times. While nomadic peoples used sinew and horse hair, following the discovery of an Egyptian lute from 1500 B.C., we know that the Egyptians had already mastered the techniques of making gut strings. It is possible that in later centuries a gut string of thin twisted gut filaments was used for the lower strings. The metal wraps we use today did not begin to develop until the mid-17th century, during the time of Stradivarius. To bring you these authentic strings at the high quality of today, Pirastro has reconstructed these developments and incorporated them into the leg string program.
